A few days ago, a client came to my dad’s store to pick up some goods that the owner had purchased but was unable to pick up. As soon as he entered and gave the owner’s name, I immediately made a confirmation call to get a reliable statement from the owner.
I continued by offering him a seat while tending to the other clients who had arrived before him. The man who arrived on behalf of the owner was irritated and complained that his time was being wasted, even though I had staff attending to this client. I attempted to calm him down, but he persisted.
He kept whining, but I remained calm and packed the stuff. When I called him and indicated the other items he was missing, he shouted that I should have put everything in one bag at that moment, raising his voice.
Finally losing my patience I retorted by telling him not to yell at me and that if he wasn’t prepared for the task for which he had been assigned, he shouldn’t have come in the first place. He wasn’t anticipating my fireback, as seen by the expression on his face.
He made a fuss about the whole thing but I ignored it because he overstepped. He then politely asked me to help him arrange everything together so it would be simpler for him to carry.
Even in manifesting the virtue of self-restraint and patience, there is a need to create a balance. The key lies in carefully picking our battles.
